Description

VISIONARY CITY PLANNING: EXPLORING PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE COMPREHENSIVE PLANS
Comprehensive city planning has been a common practice for many communities since the early part of the 20th Century. The City of Riverside was a pioneer of the early city planning movement in California, forming one of the first planning commissions in the State and adopting one of the first comprehensive plans. Using the City of Riverside as a case study, this year’s historical symposium will explore the history of the comprehensive plans that have shaped Riverside’s built environment. Beginning with the Master Plan of the City from 1928 (commonly known as the “Cheney Plan”) through the award-winning General Plan 2025, a visionary plan built on Smart Growth principles, and ending with a perspective on current and future comprehensive planning efforts, participants will gain an understanding of the interrelatedness of comprehensive plans over time and the impact that their implementation can have on a community.

PANELISTS
Marion Mitchell-Wilson – Former Executive Director, Inlandia Institute
Ken Gutierrez, AICP – Former Planning Director, City of Riverside
Al Zelinka, FAICP, CMSM – Community Developme
