Pierce Street Jazz presents "The Skipper"
La Sierra University's Pierce Street Jazz will present bassist extraordinaire Henry "The Skipper" Franklin and his band on Wednesday, January 23 at 7 p.m. The event will serve as a CD release party for Franklin's latest album, "June Night." Franklin's extensive musical background includes work on more than 150 albums and performances with many famous acts including Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Count Basie, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson. The concert will take place at the La Sierra University Alumni Center (11500 Pierce St., Riverside 92505). Admission is free.
36th Annual Mayor's State of the City Address
The City of Riverside’s new mayor, William “Rusty” Bailey will share his vision for the community at his first State of the City Address on Thursday, January 24. The once luncheon will become an evening event this year, with doors opening at 5 p.m. to the Riverside Auditorium and Events Center with a reception to follow. The presentation will also include a report on Riverside’s Economic Outlook from Jordan Levine, Director of Economic Research at Beacon Economics, LLC. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The State of the City Address will be broadcasted live on GTV channel 3 or the government access channel for your television provider.
Bike with the Mayor
Come meet Mayor Bailey and enjoy a morning bicycle ride beginning at 9 a.m. at the Martha McLean-Anza Narrows Park (5759 Jurupa Ave., Riverside 92501). Every other month the Riverside Bicycle Advisory Committee will lead us on a different route as we explore our beautiful city. All rides will be on Saturday mornings starting at 9am and last 1-2 hours. There will be several stops along the way to enjoy conversation and some places of interest. This bike route is 10 miles long and listed as an easy ride.
Pick Group Lunch Engagement: Support Community Gardens
Are you interested in Riverside's growing eco-community and possibly supporting local farmers? Come meet for lunch at Goodwin's Organic Foods & Drinks (191 West Big Springs Rd., Riverside 92507) from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and for an opportunity to learn about supporting community gardens and hear from various speakers who have contributed to making Riverside a more green-friendly place. Speakers include Rodney Taylor, Riverside Unified School District’s Student Nutrition Director; Justin Scott-Coe and Pat Silvestri, leaders of the Tequesquite Garden; Fortino Morales, UCR Community Garden Coordinator and Samantha Lynne-Wilson of Child Leader Project.
Asian Pacific Lunar New Year Festival 2013
The Asian Pacific Cultural Association presents the 2013 Asian Pacific Lunar New year Festival, Collaborating, Commemorating and Celebrating the Asian Pacific Cultural Heritage. The Festival will be held on Saturday, January 26 and will be kicking off the Year of the Snake in Downtown Riverside. The day’s events will include a parade, music, market, fashion, teas, children’s village, live performances, arts and cultural displays, food and fireworks.
