Office of the Mayor: Rusty Bailey

About the Mayor

It doesn’t get much better than being the Mayor of your hometown. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to proudly serve in this role since 2012. I am happy to share with you a little bit about my family and my experience.

My wife Judy and I are blessed to raise our two daughters in this exceptional city. We love the strong sense of community, the rich culture, and the diverse educational options. I hope that my daughters will continue my family’s 100 plus years of tradition, and raise my grandchildren in Riverside.

My K-12 education in Riverside prepared me well for higher education and my diverse career. Upon graduating from Poly High School, I attended West Point, where I earned a degree in Political Science. I then served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army, a Platoon leader, and a Company Executive Officer. My active duty service provides me with unique insight into the challenges faced by our veterans and their families. I believe that supporting our military families must be one of our top priorities.

Upon leaving the military, I started the process of pursuing my lifelong dream of having a meaningful career in public service. During my career, I worked for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Executive Office of the President, and the Riverside County Economic Development Agency. I returned to school to pursue a Master’s in Public Policy from UCLA and a teaching credential from CSU San Bernardino.

My early career provided me with a broad experience that I draw from to better serve as your Mayor. One of my most meaningful life experiences was teaching your children, our future leaders, at Poly High School. Teaching inspired me to run for elected office. As I reflected upon the future of Riverside, I wanted to ensure that the City was providing safe neighborhoods, quality jobs, and a quality of life where future generations would be proud to raise their children.

In 2007, I was elected to serve as the City Council representative for Ward 3. In 2012, I was elected Mayor. I am grateful for the City’s vote of confidence; I never take the responsibilities of this office lightly.

As you can imagine, the work of the Mayor’s office is dynamic. Staying connected to the community needs requires strong leadership, strong collaboration, and a focus on both short and long term planning. I am proud of the current state of our city, we have accomplished much and we are well positioned for future success.
