Sexual and Child Abuse Crimes FAQs

Please click on a question for an answer:

  • What can I do to prevent or intervene in instances of suspected Child Abuse, Sexual Exploitation and/or Severe Neglect of a child?

Contact the Child Protective Services 24 hour Reporting Service at 1(800) 422-4918 or (951) 413-5000. A CPS representative will make the appropriate referrals.

  • What can I do to prevent or intervene in instances of suspected Sexual Abuse of an Adult?

Contact the Rape Crisis 24-hour Hot Line at (951) 686 7273. An advocate will provide information and make appropriate referrals.

  • What if the abuser commits additional unreported violent acts, threatens the victim, or maintains an environment of severe neglect?

If the abuse or neglect is ongoing, especially in the case of a minor, please contact the police department immediately by calling 911. Otherwise, contact the police department business line at (951) 787-7911. For additional acts committed by an individual already under investigation, contact the case agent immediately.

  • Who can I contact to seek out counseling and support for myself or my family?

Contact the Rape Crisis 24-hour Hot Line at (951) 686 7273 for an adult, or Child Protective Services 24 hour Reporting Service at 1(800) 422-4918 or (951) 413-5000 for cases involving a child. An advocate will provide information and make appropriate referrals.

  • How can I arrange to drop the charges?

You must contact the case agent assigned to your incident and tell them you wish to “drop the charges." However, due to the sensitive nature of Sexual Assaults and Child Abuse, the police department will customarily proceed with the investigation in most cases. In the case of a child, the police will continue the investigation irrespective of the reporting party’s desire to prosecute. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will generally be submitted to the District Attorney's office for review and consideration of filing a criminal complaint.

  • How do I find out the name of my "case agent?

Call the General Investigations Bureau's front office at (951) 353-7100. Be prepared to provide the report number assigned to the investigation by the police officer that took the initial report. If you don't have the report number, please ask to speak with a Sexual Assault or Child Abuse Detective or the SACA Unit supervisor.
