Police Officer Lateral

A Police Officer Lateral applicant must have completed a California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy and must currently be employed as a Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff or related Law Enforcement Officer with a State of California law enforcement agency. 

Requirements 

  • Successful completion of a POST certified written test, which measures reading, writing, comprehension, and general aptitude. A sample written test can be located at POST website: (http://lib.post.ca.gov/Publications/poWrittenPracticeTest.pdf)
    This test is waived for lateral applicants

  • Meet minimum performance standards for physical agility.

  • Submit to an interview.

  • No felony conviction(s).

  • Submit to a fingerprint and criminal history check.

  • Must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible, and has applied for citizenship. 

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

  • Minimum age of 20.5 years of age to participate in the testing process, and 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

  • Sign a notarized waiver for “Authorization to Release Information.”

  • Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.

  • United States high school graduate, GED, or equivalent.

  • Submit to a polygraph examination.

  • Successfully pass a Medical and Psychological examination.
