Major Injury Traffic Collision

Location: Arlington Av. E/of Norwood Av.
Date: 01-12-01
Time: 5:00 AM

Pedestrian-1: Grady Brown Jr. (47)
Residence: Riverside, Ca.
Injuries: Multiple fractures to both legs and left arm, face, head and neck trauma and unknown internal injuries. Critical condition @ Riverside Community Hospital.

Driver-2: Timothy Merica
Residence: Riverside, Ca.
Injuries: None

Officers investigate the fatal collision on Arlington Ave.Narrative: At approximately 5:00 AM today a traffic collision occurred on Arlington Av. E/of Norwood Av. Mr. Brown was crossing Arlington Av. from the south curb to the north curb. Mr. Merica was E/B Arlington Av. approaching Norwood Av. in the #2 lane of travel driving a White 4 door 1987 Dodge Diplomat.

As Mr. Merica was approaching Norwood Av. he saw Mr. Brown in the roadway. Mr. Merica applied his brakes and swerved into the #1 lane of travel. At the same time Mr. Brown attempted to avoid the vehicle by running into the #1 lane at which time the collision occurred. Mr. Brown landed on the hood and windshield of the vehicle causing the listed injuries.

Mr. Brown was treated at the scene by members of the Riverside Fire Department and transported to Riverside Community Hospital via ambulance. Mr. Brown was treated by the emergency room staff at Riverside Community Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The collision and follow up investigation is being conducted by the Riverside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
