Riverside, Ca- Riverside Police Detective Doug Jacobs was slain today after he and fellow officer responded to a report of loud music at 3140 Lemon Street. The initial call was broadcast to Officer Ben Baker. Detective Jacobs responded to assist. Both officers were standing on an outside stairwell leading to the upstairs apartment where the loud music was reported. A male subject, identified as Steve Woodruff, who lives downstairs from where the call was reported, suddenly came out of his residence and yelled something at the officers. He then retreated back into his apartment for a brief period and came back outside with a firearm. Woodruff then shot in the direction of the officers standing on the stairwell. Detective Jacobs was struck by the gunfire. Officer Baker returned fire, but the suspect was not hit and returned back inside his residence. Assisting units were immediately summoned to the scene and Woodruff was taken into custody without further incident. Detective Jacobs was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he later died as the result of his injuries. No one else was injured.
The suspect, Steve Woodruff, African American 37, DOB 6/20/63, who resides at 3142 Lemon Street, was booked for 187 P.C. (homicide). There were no other arrests. The police investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Lt. Dave Dominguez at (909) 320-8039.
