Vehicle Pursuit Reference Man with Possible Grenade

Riverside, Ca-  Thursday, 03-29-2001, at approximately 4:00 P.M., Riverside Police Officers attempted to contact and stop Ricardo Rodriguez of Riverside, 34 years in the area of Central and Magnolia. Detectives and METRO officers had information that led them to believe that Ricardo was despondent about the possibility of being sentenced to prison this week and was threatening to hurt himself or others. Ricardo was reported to have had a live hand grenade lassoed around his neck .

When a stop was attempted, Ricardo fled onto W/B 91 and led officers on a pursuit at speeds of 100+ miles per hour. Ricardo exited on Tyler and tried to flee in the parking lot of the Galleria. While attempting to flee, Ricardo threw a small bag out the window near Nordstromsí and stopped his vehicle in the lower level Nordstromsís parking structure. Ricardo was taken into custody without a grenade around his neck. Because of the likelihood that the object thrown or the car contained the grenade, part of the Galleria lot, Nordstromsís and the Garage were closed to public access for about an hour and the Explosive Ordinance Detail (EOD) was summoned. EOD determined that neither the object or vehicle contained explosives, but a loaded firearm and moderate amount of illegal drugs were located. Questioning of Ricardo revealed that the possible grenade was in another car parked in the 4700 block of Luther. This car was located and the EOD team searched and located a inert grenade in the vehicle.

Ricardo was booked at Riverside County Jail for numerous charges, including Evading, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs. File numbers P301088236 and P301088176.
