Riverside,
Ca. - On May 18, 2001, the Riverside Police Department, in
association with the Riverside County Office of Education, the Riverside EMS
Agency, and the California Highway Patrol, conducted a free Child Safety Seat
inspection clinic at the Mission Grove Plaza on Alessandro Blvd.
The clinic was scheduled to kick-off the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) National Buckle-Up America program. Forty-eight child safety seats were inspected during the four hour clinic. Of those seats inspected, only one was found to have been properly installed. This finding backs up NHTSA studies that show 87 percent of all child safety systems are not properly installed in today's vehicles. Historically, statistics from Riverside County child seat clinics have shown a 97 to 98 percent misuse rate.
Child
safety seats that were found to be unsafe, or had been recalled by the
manufacturers, were replaced at low costs to the parents. New and existing
seats were re-installed in the vehicles by certified NHTSA Child Safety Seat
technicians.
Child safety seat inspections are held periodically at different locations throughout Riverside County. For more information, contact Marsha Rozell with the RCOE at (909) 826-6248, or Riverside Police PSR Karen Haverkamp at (909) 789-0741.
