Riverside, Ca- On Thursday, 10-11-2001, at approximately 12:40 A.M., Riverside Police Officers responded to the 11600 block of Richmond Street to assist Deputies from the Riverside Sheriff Department with a threats investigation. A 42 year old male subject called a Moreno Valley resident from his home on Richmond Street and made credible threats to kill the subject.
When Riverside Officers arrived, they observed various types of knives stuck in the yard and in a mailbox post out in front of the residence. Officers attempted to contact the subject at the front door, but he refused to answer the door and threatened to kill himself, or get the police to do it for him. Officers contacted the subject by phone and for approximately one hour, attempted to persuade him to surrender. The subject became verbally violent and refused to exit the house.
SWAT was summoned to the scene and approximately 30 minutes later, the subject appeared outside at the front door challenging the Officers. Officers immediately fired "Less Lethal" rounds at the subject, striking him in the legs. The subject ran back into the house, but was soon apprehended by SWAT officers.
The subject was transported to the hospital for a medical clearance and than booked at Riverside County ETS for 72 hour evaluation. Further inquiries relating to the nature of the threats or victim identity should be directed to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department - Moreno Valley Station. The identity and address of the subject will not be released due to confidentiality restrictions related to the mentally ill.
