Riverside, Ca- On September 22, 2005, at approximately
6:45 AM, Ms. Desha was riding her bicycle east on Columbia approaching Chicago
along the south curb. Traffic ahead of her was stopped. Ms. Desha attempted to
ride between the curbline and the traffic stopped in the #2 lane of east bound
Columbia.
Ms. Desha lost control of her bicycle and fell to the pavement. She landed under
the rear dual wheels of the second trailer of a double tractor-trailer
combination. A witness to the collision stated at the same moment Ms. Desha fell
under the wheels of the trailer traffic moved forward. The tractor-trailer
combination moved forward running over Ms. Desha.
Ms. Desha was treated at the scene by members of the Riverside Fire Department
and transported to Riverside Community Hospital (RCH) via ambulance. The
emergency room staff at RCH treated Ms. Desha. Ms. Desha died as a result of
injuries sustained in the collision.
Due to the size, weight and length of the tractor-trailer combination there is a
strong possibility the driver did not know or realize he or she had been
involved in a collision with a bicyclist.
The Riverside Police Department is asking the publics help in locating the
driver of the tractor-trailer, there are no criminal charges pending on the
driver of the tractor-trailer this is only for identification purposes only.
Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to please call Det.
Joe Avila at (951) 826-5577.
