DUI Checkpoint has positive results

Riverside, Ca- On Friday, August 25, 2006, the Riverside Police Department conducted a checkpoint for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) at the intersection of University Avenue and Douglass Avenue. Several Volunteers and Explorers from the department were on hand to assist with the effort.

Between the hours of 6 PM and 12 midnight, more than 2000 vehicles drove through the checkpoint. Three (3) subjects were arrested for DUI, sixty (60) were cited for licensing, seatbelt and/or open container violations and fifty (50) vehicles were impounded. Several of the vehicles were also inspected to determine if they were illegally equipped for street racing and four were cited for illegal modifications.

In addition, one subject approaching the checkpoint elected to pitch a loaded gun out the window of his vehicle. Unbeknownst to the suspect, a citizen passing by alerted officers to what had occurred. Members of the Explorer post assisted officers in the search for the gun and after a few minutes, the gun was located and safely secured. The suspect was also arrested.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
