Chief Leach announces promotion
Riverside, Ca- Chief Russ Leach is pleased to announce the promotion of Sergeant Vance Hardin to the rank of
Lieutenant, effective April 21, 2006. He will be assigned to Field Operations as a Watch Commander.
Lieutenant Vance Hardin was born and raised in Riverside – a 1978 graduate of La Sierra High School and son of
a 30-year veteran Riverside County Sheriff’s sergeant. Lieutenant Hardin began his police career with the
Riverside County Sheriff’s Office as a Cadet in 1978, transferring to the Riverside Police Department as a
Police Officer in 1982. During his career, Hardin worked as in Patrol, as a Field Training Officer, with the
Street Narcotics unit, on the SWAT team and with the Gang unit. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1995.
Lieutenant Hardin’s most recent work has been as a supervisor of Field Training Officers and, since July 2005,
as the administrative sergeant in the Personnel and Training Division, overseeing the FTO program and new
recruits in the police academies. He has also been an instructor at Riverside Community College, is an
instructor on Patrol Tactics and Traffic Stops at the sheriff’s academy and an instructor of Supervisory
Leadership and Training for California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
Hardin is married to Riverside Police Officer Carla Hardin; together they are parents to three daughters
and one son.
