Detectives investigate suspicious vehicle accident
Riverside, Ca- On November 22, 2006, at 11:40 p.m., officers responded to the 10000 block of Campbell Ave. after receiving a 911 call from a caller on Campbell Ave. who said they heard shots and a man was lying in the street. At about the same time, police received another 911 call, this one from the Stop and Shop mini- mart located nearby at 8863 Philbin Ave. This caller told dispatchers that someone on Campbell Ave. had attempted to hit her vehicle with an object before she drove away.
Upon arrival on Campbell Ave., officers discovered a Hispanic man in his twenties lying in the street at Campbell and Overton Avenues unconscious and suffering from severe injuries to his head and legs. He was transported by American Medical Response paramedics to Riverside Community Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Police contacted the female caller at the Stop and Shop on Philbin Ave. and noticed moderate damage to her vehicle, a red Nissan Sentra. Based on her statements, witness statements and evidence at the scene, officers were able to determine that no shots had been fired but she had actually collided with the man.
Police have determined that the injured man might have been among a group who was involved in an altercation minutes prior to the collision at the Stop and Shop mini-mart, which is located at 8863 Philbin. The female driver may have also been present at the Stop and Shop. Detectives are currently questioning the driver and several witnesses to the incident to determine what occurred.
Circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. Police are actively seeking information from any witnesses to the traffic collision on Campbell Ave. or the possibly related earlier altercation at the Stop and Shop mini-mart on Philbin.
