Holiday Enforcement Program begins

Riverside, Ca- The Riverside Police Department is initiating its Holiday Enforcement Program throughout the city. It is a dual-faceted program utilizing targeted enforcement and education with neighborhood residents and local businesses to promote public and personal safety during this busy time of year.

"Holiday safety starts with you" is a message that applies to everyone.

Targeted enforcement will include teams of officers working at various shopping centers concentrating on robberies and thefts from parking areas. Officers will also be on the lookout for subjects on parole and probation with records of robbery and theft to deter them from committing new crimes.

Educational efforts will focus on "Hardening the target" -- protecting individuals, families, homes and businesses with proven common-sense strategies.

Examples:

  • Lock doors and windows before leaving your home or your vehicle.

  • Avoid displaying gifts where they can be seen outside a home or vehicle.

  • Keep only necessary cash in cash drawers

  • Shop with a friend

  • Park in busy, well-lit areas

  • Watch for suspicious activity and report it to police immediately.

  • Designate a driver for party events!

Businesses and homeowners can call for special Holiday Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training, unique to their location and circumstances. The Riverside Police Community Policing Team has established a special information line at (951) 353-7689.

The Holiday Enforcement Program begins November 24, 2006, and continues until January 5, 2007.
