Fatal Traffic Collision – Vehicle vs Pedestrian
Riverside, Ca- On October 26, 2006, at 5:48pm, a 36-year-old disabled woman was in her wheelchair on the east sidewalk of Olivewood, just north of Pachappa, on her way home. At this same time a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 16-year-old male was driving east on Jurupa approaching the curve onto northbound Olivewood at a high rate of speed. According to witness statements, the Jetta was apparently engaged in a street race with a 1988 Honda CRX, driven by a 17-year-old male.
The Jetta veered off the roadway and onto the east curb and sidewalk just north of Pachappa, striking the woman in the wheelchair and continuing north, driving through a concrete light post and coming to rest in the #2 lane of Olivewood. The disabled woman was trapped under the vehicle.
Witnesses called 911 and Riverside Fire and Police arrived within minutes. Fire personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene a short time later. She suffered major head and body trauma.
The 16-year-old male driver of the Jetta was detained at the scene. The 17-year-old driver of the Honda was found stopped just north of the collision on Bandini by a motor officer responding to the scene. Both boys were detained for investigation and subsequently taken into custody after further investigation by detectives.
The female victim’s name is being withheld pending further notifications. All parties involved live in Riverside.
The 2 juvenile drivers were subsequently booked into the Riverside Juvenile Hall on charges of Vehicular Manslaughter, based on the evidence of illegal street racing.
