Fatal Traffic Collision Vehicle vs Pedestrian

Riverside, Ca- Today at approximately 5:47 pm, a 1999 Dodge Pick up Truck was traveling W/B on Wells in the #1 lane approaching Wholstetter Avenue. At this same time a 72-year-old man was pushing a shopping cart across Wells in a northwest direction, outside the crosswalk, against a red light, according to a witness at the scene. The man was struck by the right front of the truck and carried across the intersection where the vehicle stopped and he came off the hood and onto the ground.

A witness called 911 and members of the Riverside Fire and Police Departments responded to the scene. The man was treated at the scene for a broken right leg and traumatic injuries to his head. The paramedics transported him to Riverside Community Hospital where he was released to the care of the Emergency Room staff. He was pronounced deceased from his injuries by ER staff doctors at 7:05 pm.

The Riverside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene and the collision is under investigation.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Ken Madsen at (951) 353-7989.
