School evacuated after minor explosion

Riverside, Ca- The Riverside Police and Fire Departments responded to a call of a minor explosion this afternoon at Amelia Earhart Middle School, 20202 Aptos St., in the Orangecrest area of the city. There were no injuries or damage.

A small chemical-reaction explosion in a plastic soda pop bottle went off inside a wastebasket in a common quad area at approximately 12:25 p.m. Students reported loud bang and seeing some smoke.

School staff initiated standard evacuation procedures. School officials notified parents of the incident by telephone. Students were evacuated to the adjacent playing field and dismissed to parents, to school buses or sent home, according to procedure. School resumes normal schedule tomorrow.

Riverside Police and Riverside Unified School District officials are investigating strong leads. Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is urged to call Riverside Police Sgt. Val Graham at (951) 351-6059.
