Riverside, Ca- On Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at about 8:20 pm, Riverside police officers responded to a residence which is located in the 20800 block of Westbury Road, after a man telephoned police to report that two men armed with guns were at his house with his family. The caller, who was not at his residence at the time of the call, went on to say that the men were threatening to harm his family unless he returned to the house with a large sum of money for them.
Police officers quickly arrived and surrounded the house. A short time later two adult females and a small child exited the house and were detained by the officers. They were found to be residents of the house. Two adult males subsequently exited the house and were also detained. They were determined not to be residents of the house. The original caller returned to the house and officers began investigating the incident.
Detectives from the Riverside Police Departmentís Special Investigations Bureau responded to assist with the investigation. All parties were interviewed and the males who had been detained were subsequently identified by the victim as the suspects in the incident. There was a simulated firearm located at the scene by officers.
Two adult men have been arrested and charged with extortion. They have been identified as Robert Bats, 46-years-old and Amono Washington, 26-years-old, both have addresses out of Moreno Valley.
The motivation for the crime and the relationship, if any, between the parties is not clear at this time. No one was injured during the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
