Operation Lifesaver Rail Safety Education Program

Riverside, Ca- On Thursday, June 21, 2007, Police Officers from the Riverside Police Department, Union Pacific Railroad, Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad and Metrolink conducted an Operation Lifesaver Rail Safety Education program in the greater Riverside area. Officers were deployed to several railroad crossing locations in the City and County of Riverside and conducted enforcement and education stops of drivers who violated the right of way of approaching railway traffic.

The program is intended to educate the public to the inherent danger in crossing railroad tracks when the warning signals and gates are operating and to encourage safe and proper decisions when drivers encounter them. Officers were assigned to monitor the crossings from an approaching locomotive and from the street. The program lasted for approximately 3 hours. In that time, the participating officers made more than 43 enforcement stops.

Members of the public who are interested in learning more about this type of operation can do so at oli.org.
