Two arrested for Feb. 16 homicide
Riverside, Ca- Two 17-year-old male juveniles were arrested Thursday night for their roles in a Feb. 16 knife assault on two men, killing Gerard David Phillips, 35.
On Friday, February 16, 2007, at 5:50 p.m., a Riverside Police Officer stopped a vehicle being driven erratically near the intersection of Van Buren and Colorado avenues. The officer discovered two stabbing victims inside, who were being rushed to the hospital by a relative. Both men were treated at the scene prior to being transported to local hospitals. One victim, an 18-year-old male, was listed in serious condition; the other victim, Phillips, succumbed to his wounds later that night.
Officers learned the two victims had been involved in a physical fight with two young men at an apartment complex in the 5800-block of Montgomery Avenue.
Detectives Jim Brandt and Mike Medici from the Centralized Investigations Bureau responded to process the crime scene and conduct an investigation. The detectives uncovered information that eventually resulted in the identification of two juvenile suspects, both members of a local Riverside street gang.
On March 15, 2007, at 5:30 p.m., Detective Brandt, assisted by the Riverside Police Departmentís Gang, PACT and Metro units, coordinated a surveillance of two homes in the Arlanza area of Riverside. The surveillance resulted in the arrests of the two suspects and subsequent search of their homes. A stolen firearm and assault weapons were seized from one of the homes. The juveniles were booked in Juvenile Hall.
