The City of Riverside Photo Red Light Enforcement Program has proven to be a valuable tool for the City’s traffic safety improvement program. Since the time of initial installation, red light violations have reduced by 58%. Between 2006 and 2011, traffic collisions of all types have decreased by 45% at the photo enforced intersections and have decreased by 44% Citywide.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that red light cameras used for safety have been shown effective in modifying driver behavior, in some instances reducing violation rates by as much as 40 percent during the first year of enforcement.
The Institute also notes that driver compliance often extends to non-equipped intersections as well. Between 2006 and 2011 the overall statistics for broadside accidents city wide is down approximately 43%, indicating the benefit of red light cameras and awareness of drivers at all intersections.
