THE TRAGICAL HISTORY OF DOCTOR FAUSTUS
A play by Christopher Marlowe
Directed by Raphael Massie

Would you sell your soul to the devil for your heart’s desire?

In The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, playwright Christopher Marlowe explores religion, magic, and, for better or worse, the consequences of power. Filled with supernatural phenomena, angels, demons, as well as mortal characters of every sort, this particular production draws inspiration from the High Middle Ages, and the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, the origin of our modern-day Halloween. A Medieval setting for this Elizabethan play highlights a shift in religious practice, from Paganism (and others), to the early centuries of Christianity, providing a lens through which we are able to experience Marlowe’s own views on faith, both spiritual and political.
