Ward 1 Edwards / Commercial Structure Fire / 1500 Block of Columbia / RIV Incident #20-021704

On Thursday September 17, 2020 at 5:17 p.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department responded a first alarm structure fire assignment to the 1500 Block of Columbia.  Firefighters arrived to discover a commercial fifth wheel trailer in a commercial suite on fire.  Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack and held the fire to the trailer.  There was no fire extension to the commercial building.  There was smoke and water damage to the commercial building.  The business specializes in musical instrument repair.

The cause of fire appears to be most probable accidental in nature due to a heat gun left in the on position and stored on a combustible material. The owner was alert of the fire by nearby business owner and he attempted to extinguish fire with two fire extinguishers.

The estimated loss is at $50,000 with a save of $500,000.  There was no damage to adjoining business suites.  A total of 17 firefighters and one chief officer responded to the incident.  There were no firefighter injuries.  The business owner was assessed by fire department paramedics for possible smoke inhalation.  The business owner declined any further treatment and care and was not transported by ambulance.
