(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of a traffic accident on the eastbound 91 freeway between Van Buren and Adams.  The first engine on scene reported multiple vehicles with major damage and multiple patients.  Additionally, one of the vehicles had caught fire and had spread to the ivy covering the sound wall.  Simultaneously, a structure fire response was dispatched to the 8700 Block of Indiana for brush on fire behind an apartment building.  The fire was related to the traffic accident with fire on the freeway.  Crews worked together to triage and treat all accident victims while mitigating the fire spread.  There were a total of 5 patients; two critical, two minor, and one deceased.  The critical patients were transported to RCH.  No structures were damaged and no residents were displaced.  Resources were committed for approximatley 2 hours to overhaul the brush/ivy fire.  There were no firefighter injuries reported.  CHP is conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.
