Current Situation
On Friday September 6, 2024, at 1:02 p.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department dispatched a single engine company for an area check of white smoke reported in the river bottom area. Engine 1 discovered a vegetation fire (large spot) in the Old Boy Scout Camp located at Mission Inn Ave X Santa Ana River burn in light to heavy fuels with a rapid rate of spread.
A second alarm was immediately requested bringing five engines, one brush engine and one water tender and two battalion chiefs to the incident. Due to the onshore winds, and the fire ember casting from the burning palm fronds and several spot fires were established in heavy fuels out ahead of the main fire. A third and fourth alarm were requested to the incident. Mutual Aid was requested from Riverside County Cal Fire with five additional engine companies and a battalion chief to the incident.
With the onshore winds and ember casting from the Palm Trees a total of six spot fires were established from the main body of fire. The Riverside Police Department Air One assisted the fire department with fire suppression efforts with water dropping on the fire. A total of 16 engines, 3 brush trucks, 1 water tender and 2 Cal Fire hand crews, 3 chief officers and five incident support personnel were assigned at the height of the incident. City Streets assisted with two tractors to break apart a mulch pile that was burning because of the fire located near the VFW Post adjacent to Lake Evans. The forward progress of the fire was halted at 5:28 p.m.
Two fire firefighters suffered minor injuries during the incident and were transported to a local area hospital.
Fire Department Arson investigator with assistance from the Riverside Police Department apprehended a suspect of the fire and is in custody.
Firefighters will be on scene today patrolling the area and performing additional mop-up.
