Current Situation
The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of a vegetation fire in the area of Marlborough and Northgate near the base of Box Springs Mountain. The first due engine company reported approximately 2 acres burning in grass and light brush at a slow rate of spread in a drainage just west of North Sugarloaf Trail. Due to the steep terrain and the potential for the fire to become a major incident, a second alarm was requested. Cal Fire also sent a full brush response with aircraft due to the threat to county areas. Riverside City Firefighters, along with personnel from Cal Fire attacked the fire on the ground and in the air, stopping the blaze at the top of the hillside in about 35 minutes. The fire consumed about 6 acres of grass and brush. Firefighters from both agencies remained on the scene for a little over 2 hours mopping up hotspots. The origin of the fire was in a homeless encampment at the base of the hill, but the cause could not be determined. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries during the incident
