Current Situation
On 7/17/2024 at 1426 hours, the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to the Ysmael Villegas Community Center pool for a report of a child feeling ill. Paramedic Firefighters arrived and discovered multiple children were complaining of symptoms such as nausea, feeling light- headed, and burning throats. The pool area was evacuated, and all staff and children were moved to the nearby community center. Additional resources were requested, including Riverside City Fire's Hazardous Materials Team. A total of 18 children were evaluated by paramedics on scene. Four children were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. All patients were in stable condition.
Riverside Parks Department maintenance personnel worked with the Riverside Fire Haz Mat team to identify what was causing the symptoms. Crews utilized advanced air and water monitoring devices, but all levels were within normal limits. The incident remains under investigation. There were no injuries to fire personnel or Parks staff. All children were successfully reunited with their parents or guardians.
