Incident: Vegetation Fire at Boy Scout Camp
Response:
The City of Riverside Fire Department responded with an augmented high wildland response due to a Red Flag weather event, with reports of a vegetation fire in the Boy Scout Camp area. Firefighters arrived to find a ¼-acre fire in light to heavy fuels, driven by Santa Ana Winds. Given the potential for the fire to spread to 10 acres and threaten nearby structures, the incident was upgraded, calling for two additional alarms. An evacuation warning was issue through Everbridge to the community adjacent to the Boy Scout Camp, this warning was lifted at 7:52 a.m.
Mutual Aid:
The San Bernardino County Fire Department assisted with five additional engine companies, a Chief Officer, and two hand crews. Riverside Police Department’s Helicopter Air One provided aerial reconnaissance and water drops.
Containment and Resources:
The fire was contained at 1.9 acres. A total of 14 engine companies, two water tenders, two hand crews, five chief officers, and three overhead personnel, amounting to 83 personnel, were involved in the incident. The fire was fully contained at 11:03 a.m. Firefighters remained on-site throughout the day for tactical patrol and mop-up.
Investigation and Cause:
A dedicated fire department arson investigator determined the fire originated in a homeless encampment, with the probable cause being human-related.
Injuries and Damages:
- One minor firefighter injury
- No civilian injuries
- No damage to surrounding residential structures
Summary:
The City of Riverside Fire Department’s swift response, supported by mutual aid, prevented significant spread or structural damage. The incident was resolved with minimal acreage burned and no damage to nearby properties.
