    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

On Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 12:14 p.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department responded a first alarm vegetation fire response to the intersection of Trautwein X Mission Grove for numerous reports of a vegetation fire.  Firefighters arrived on scene to find a vegetation fire burning in light to heavy fuels in an arroyo behind the Kindercare in the 7800 block of Mission Grove Parkway.  The fire was contained to a 1/8 of an acre.

Firefighters had several near misses with falling tree branches (Widow Makers) and had to back out of the area.  The tree producing the falling branches was fallen by a firefighter utilizing a chainsaw.  Once the hazard tree was mitigated, firefighters were able to continue mop-up.  A preliminary investigation was conducted and the cause was a homeless encampment cooking fire as the most probable cause.  There were no witnesses and no suspects on scene.  No firefighters or civilians were injured.  Estimated save to surrounding structures is at $2,000,000.  A total of 16 firefighters and one chief officer responded.
