(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

On Sunday, February 2, 2020 at 5:11 p.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department responded a Hazardous Materials Response to 900 University UCR at the Science Laboratory for reports of a Liquid Nitrogen Container leaking at the valve assembly.  Firefighters arrived on scene to discover two Liquid Nitrogen Container’s overfilled and the pressure relieve valves were discharging the extra pressure.  The containers were removed to an outside area in an adjacent parking lot.  Firefighters were assisted by UCR personnel and UCR P.D.

The Hazardous Materials team secured the containers in a secure location and were assisted by UCR personnel to transfer the product to another container.  UCR will have the two containers picked-up on Monday by the shipping company to have the containers inspected.  Riverside County Environmental Health was contacted along with the UCR Fire Marshall.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.  There was no damage to the UCR Science Facility and no damage to any research.  A total of 26 firefighters and one chief officer responded to the incident.  There were no evacuations and the facility remained fully functional.
