    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

The City of Riverside Fire Department was dispatched to the Chemical Sciences building at the University of California, Riverside for a possible hazardous materials leak.  On arrival we learned that a transient female had broken into the building and was actively attempting to open valves on hazardous materials containers.  UCR Police department personnel were able to subdue the transient female, take her into custody, and remove her from the building.  In addition, police personnel  assisted with evacuation of the building and securing of the scene.

The City of Riverside Fire Department Hazardous Materials team arrived on scene and took control of the hazard mitigation.  Entry teams were deployed into the building to both monitor oxygen levels, and to stop the release of any hazardous chemicals.  It was determined that the chemical released was nitrogen gas.  The building was ventilated and rendered safe by Fire personnel.  Care of the scene was turned back over to UCR personnel.  The chemical release poses no threat to the public at this time, and there are no further hazards that will result from this incident.
