***Final Update***
On, January 14, 2025, at approximately 11:39 am, the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a reported unknown type of fire in the area of Victoria and McAllister. The first arriving Engine Captain reported a wind driven vegetation fire. The fire was located down a 700’ access way within the orange groves within a 15’ high pile of mulch that was burning towards another larger mulch pile with a threat to a surrounding structure.
Crews quickly positioned hoselines to protect the adjacent mulch pile and structure to knock down the advancing fire. A total of 6 Engine Companies, 1 Brush Truck, 1 Water Tender, 1 Chief Officer, 1 Arson Investigator, and 1 Prevention Officer assisted in the operation.
The fire was contained to the single mulch pile with fire crews committed for approximately 3 hours. There was no reported injuries or equipment damages.
The Arson Investigator determined the fire to be accidental spontaneous combustion from the decaying pile of mulch. The Prevention Officer worked with the property owner to reduce the risks associated with storing the large volume of agricultural debris on the property.
The scene was left with the property owner to conduct further overhaul of the fire and mitigation using on site heavy equipment.
The City of Riverside Fire Department is currently on scene at 1051 Cleveland Ave for a vegetation fire and mulch pile fire. RPD has been requested to close Victoria Ave at McAllister. Firefighters have the the fire contained with a commitment time of two to three hours.
