Current Situation
On Monday June 10, 2019 at 2:20 p.m., the City of Riverside Fire Department dispatch center received several reports of a fire outside the loading dock of the Pet Smart store in the Canyon Springs area of Riverside. Smoke was seen about two miles from the area as units were responding. The first arriving unit had an area of about 40 feet by 30 feet of cardboard boxes on fire against the building and a roll up door leading to the inside receiving area of the store. Fire attack was started and the blaze was under control in about 5 minutes. Crews investigated for extension into the building. Upon arrival to the front of the building, there was black smoke throughout the structure. Store personnel were evacuating the animals from the building were placed in kennels out to the front of the store. About 30-40 dogs and cats were removed from the store. Other animals and reptiles were sheltered in place as smoke removal was the priority. There was no fire extension into the building. It took about 40 minutes to completely remove the smoke from the building. There were no animal causalities or civilian injuries and the business was released back to the store manager.
Upon investigation, There was a large pile of cardboard boxes outside the building. A glass fish tank was placed outside in the area of the cardboard. Outside temperatures were about 105 degrees at the time of the fire. It appears that the sun reflected through the glass fish tank and heated the cardboard enough to ignite the fire.
