    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of a vegetation fire near Lake Evans in Fairmount Park. Additional reports placed the fire on the Southwest side of the park near the bandstand. The first due Battalion Chief arrived on scene and reported a spot of vegetation on fire on the hillside at the intersection of Locust and Banks. The fire was immediately threatening at least 2 homes on Parkview Terrace which was above the fire. Due to threat to structures above the fire, a second alarm brush response was requested to the scene. The first arriving engines companies were directed to the intersection of Brockton and Parkview Terrace to provide structure defense, while other units were deployed on Locust to attack the fire from below. Riverside City Firefighters quickly deployed attack lines between the threatened homes and the advancing fire. As firefighters attacked the fire, they observed a powerline that had fallen. All personnel on the scene were advised to stay away from the downed line, and Riverside Public Utilities was requested to the scene to render the downed line safe. Firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the fire in about twenty minutes, but remained on scene for an additional 90 minutes to fully contain and mop-up the fire. The cause of the fire was a powerline that had come down from a residence on Parkview Terrace. There were no structures damaged as a result of the fire, and no civilian or firefighter injuries.
