    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

At 0217 hours, The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of a possible structure fire in the 6200 block of Academy Avenue. The 1st due Engine Company arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the 2nd story of a 2000 square foot single-family dwelling. Riverside City Firefighters deployed attack lines to the 2nd story while firefighters from the truck company ascended to the roof. Firefighters found a bedroom and bathroom well involved with fire extending into the attic space. Firefighters from the truck company ventilated the roof over the fire to remove toxic smoke and heat from the interior of the structure. Additional companies performed a search of the residence and confirmed that the three occupants living in the home were safely out of the structure. Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters went to work salvaging as much of the home as they could, but the 2nd floor suffered significant fire and smoke damage, while the 1st floor suffered some water damage. 3 adult occupants and 2 cats were displaced by the fire. Red Cross was contacted to assist with shelter for the displaced. The cause of the fire was an electrical short in a master bathroom light fixture on the 2nd floor. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries as a result of the incident. Riverside firefighters remained on scene mopping up the fire and providing salvage for about 3 hours.
