    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

At 1113 on March 3rd the City of Riverside Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 11700 Block of Independence Street.  The first arriving unit found heavy smoke coming from the garage and attic of a small single story residential home.  Firefighters immediately made entry into the home and were able to control the fire which originated in the garage area.  The fire had extended into the attic space above the living quarters.  The contents of the home were moved and covered with salvage covers to minimize the damage while aggressively extinguishing the fire in the attic.  The cause of the fire was electrical failure of a washing machine which spread to the contents of the garage.  Unfortunately, two of the residents' cats perished in the fire.  There were no injuries to the occupants of the home or the firefighters on scene.  The Red Cross was contacted to assist with lodging of the residents.  The damage was $60,000 to the structure and contents with a save of $480,000.
