Final Update:
On Friday, April 15th at 7:38 p.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department responded a first alarm structure fire assignment to the Smart & Final located at 2744 Canyon Springs Parkway. Firefighters arrived on scene and discovered a A/C unit on the roof on fire with the fire being gas fed by a natural gas pipe. Firefighters ensured the business was evacuated and engaged in fire attack. The building utilities were shut-off including the natural gas. The business was filled with light smoke.
The business suffered damaged to perishable food product along with water damage to product in the store.
Smart & Final responded out with their Lost & Theft Division to coordinate building restoration. Riverside County Environmental Health were contacted and placed in communication with Smart & Final representatives for clean-up. The store is closed pending restoration work and Riverside County Environmental Health approval to re-open the store. The store is expected to re-open Saturday.
There were no firefighter or civilian injures.
The fire cause is determined to be a mechanical failure of the air conditioning unit.
