Final
On December 15, 2023, the Riverside City Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial strip mall located in the 3800 block of Tyler Avenue. Upon arrival, fire department crews encountered a medium-sized, two-story strip mall with smoke coming from the roof. Tyler Command was established, and crews initiated an offensive fire attack.
Upon investigation, crews discovered a fire within the walls of the structure, extending from the first floor to the second and reaching the attic space. The fire's location within the walls and subfloor posed challenges to firefighting operations. Fortunately, the businesses within the complex were unoccupied at the time of the incident. Unfortunately, several animals housed in a pet care facility succumbed to smoke inhalation.
Riverside Fire Arson Investigators promptly arrived on the scene and successfully determined the cause and origin of the fire. The Riverside Police Department provided care to the affected animals and assisted with traffic control. It took a total of one battalion chief, four engines, one truck, one squad, and one breathing support unit four hours to expose and completely extinguish the fire.
Fire Prevention and building officials have been notified for additional follow-up and assessment needs.
Initial Report
The City of Riverside Fire Department is on scene in the 3800 block of Tyler for a two-story commercial strip mall fire. The fire is in the walls between two suites on the second floor. Firefighters are having a difficult time in making access to the fire located in the walls. At this time there are no civilian or firefighter injuries. The strip mall has been evacuated. Battalion 2 is the Tyler Incident Commander.
