    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

On January 27th, 2025, The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to an unknown type of fire reported near the 91 freeway and University Ave.  The first arriving unit reported an encampment fire burning inside the 14th street on ramp bridge.  The fire was quickly extinguished.  While investigating the cause of the fire, we were unable to determine if there was anybody still inside.  The fire department’s technical rescue team responded to complete primary and secondary searches of the confined space.  The search was clear of any people inside the bridge.  CHP and Cal Trans arrived on scene, and they were briefed of our findings.  Cal Trans will remain on scene to conduct a safety inspection the bridge and will secure any openings.  A fire department investigator was on scene.  The cause was undetermined but most likely human and encampment related. There were not any civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
