Subject: Fire destroys 1920's Historical Local Church in Riverside Update

The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at a church in the 4200 block of Cedar St. The first arriving engine company reported heavy smoke and fire venting from the roof of a large single story church. Two additional alarms were requested along with an AMR ambulance and RPD. An aggressive fire attack was initiated and a primary search was started. Approx. eighteen minutes into the incident the interior fire crews reported that they had a running attic fire with the possibility of flashover conditions and structural collapse. The interior crews were withdrawn from the structure and the primary search was called off. Shortly after withdrawing, the roof collapsed and a defensive tactic was started by utilizing an aerial attack with two ladder trucks.

The fire was contained after 2 hours with a total of 38 firefighters on scene, two safety officers and Fire Chief Moore were also on scene. There were no civilian, however, two firefighters suffered minor injuries. The church pastors were notified and arrived on scene to assess the damage. The Arson Investigation Team along with an investigator from ATF began conducting the investigation. The cause of the fire was determined electrical.
