Subject: River Bottom Fire burns 20 Acres

The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the river bottom area near Old Ranch Rd. and Rubidoux Ave. Numerous calls from area residents were received and Firefighters reported a large amount of smoke when they arrived in the area. Units arrived and found a acre of vegetation on fire. Crews immediately requested additional resources. City of Riverside Fire Department received assistance from the cities of Murrieta and Corona Fire Departments. Cal Fire / Riverside County Fire Department provided fire engines, hand crews and 1 helicopter to assist with the fire attack. Fire crews were successful from keeping the fire in the river bottom area and away from any structures. At the height of the fire attack, over 100 firefighters were on scene of this difficult fire.
Two (2) firefighters received minor injuries during firefighting operations. One (1) firefighter was transported to Riverside Community Hospital and the other firefighter was treated on scene. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the night to patrol and overhaul the fire area. Cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
