Subject: Las Colinas Apartments Structure Fire
Full Text:

The afternoon of Monday, June 17th, the City of Riverside Fire Department responded units to a report of a structure fire at the Los Colinas Apartment Complex. The first arriving units reported smoke and fire visible from a second story apartment and initiated a quick interior fire attack and ventilation operation. A search and rescue operation was put into place to search for trapped victims, no victims were found. The coordinated fire attack and ventilation operation confined the fire to the apartment of origin.

Maintenance personnel at the apartment site heard the smoke detector sounding and tried to extinguish the fire using a portable fire extinguisher. They thought they had completed extinguishment but the fire flashed again and the fire grew to a size they could not control. Due to the size of the apartment complex and the unknown need for a rescue a third alarm was dispatched.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation. There were no reported civilian or fire department injuries. The early detection prompted by the smoke detector and resulting rapid fire department response is a reminder of the importance of properly operating smoke detectors. Smoke detectors should be tested monthly and batteries should be changed annually and as needed.
