The Chinese Moon Festival, which is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is a traditional Chinese Celebration that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. It is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month in the Chinese calendar when the moon is at its fullest and brightest of the year.
It is a family holiday, much like Thanksgiving in the United States and families gather to watch the full moon rise and enjoy pastries made specifically for the event called "moon cakes".
You can celebrate this holiday with the Riverside Metropolitan Museum on October 3 from 6 -8 pm. This special evening will include Chinese storytelling, traditional songs, and Chinese crafts and games. Try a traditional mooncake, view the moon through a high-powered telescope and learn more about Riverside's Chinatown.
The Festival is done in partnership with San Diego Huaxia Chinese School, Riverside Campus; Riverside Astronomical Society; Storyteller Barbara Wong; and the Riverside Museum Associates.
This free event is perfect for all ages and is held at the Museum's Heritage House, which is located at 8193 Magnolia Ave. in Riverside. For more information, please call (951) 826-5273.
