The alcove along and beneath the stairway to the second floor features a slant-front desk of walnut and walnut veneer. There is a storage area for bundled papers under the writing table. The desk is probably English, with legs featuring a typical Chippendale cabriole with ball and claw feet. This object, like many of the house's furnishings, is from a Riverside house of the late nineteenth century.
On the desk are the sort of objects that one might expect to find in the home of a middle-aged widow -- a calendar from the year 1892, a pen and ink well, an ink-well, a guest book, and a box of
mourning stationery.
