Polite Society at Home and Abroad, an 1891 book on etiquette, daily life, and the concerns of people of refinement, devotes an entire chapter to the guest bedroom. Readers were advised that these rooms were properly light colored, well aired, scrupulously clean, and stocked with those items that a guest might need to ensure happiness and comfort. Such rooms were appropriately outfitted with books to read, lamps and matches to light them, a fresh bottle of water and a tumbler each evening, stationery, a writing desk, a sewing kit, a rocking chair, and a waste basket. This room has been restored and furnished with such advice in mind.
