Incorporated into the California Vehicle Code in September 2014, the ‘Three Feet for Safety Act ‘ requires motorists overtaking and passing a bicycle in the same direction to leave a minimum distance of three feet between the motor vehicle and the bicycle / bicyclist. This requirement applies whether or not signs are present to remind motorists of the Three Feet for Safety Act. Reference: California Vehicle Code Section 21760

Bicycling as a means of transportation has been growing in popularity as many communities work to create more balanced transportation systems by giving bicyclists a greater share in use of roadway networks.
