Incorporated into the California Vehicle Code in September 2014, the ‘Three Feet for Safety Act ‘ requires motorists overtaking and passing a bicycle in the same direction to leave a minimum distance of three feet between the motor vehicle and the bicycle / bicyclist. Buffered bicycle lanes provide an additional 2 feet of clearance between a bicycle lane and adjacent motorists. Buffered bicycle lanes are designated with two longitudinal white stripes and interior diagonal markings. Buffered bicycle lanes assist in the compliance with the Three Feet for Safety Act.
