"Every Fifteen Minutes"

Narrative: On April 4, 2000 the Riverside Police Department in conjunction with California Alcoholic Beverage Control, the California Office of Traffic Safety and Norte Vista High School will present the Every Fifteen Minutes program. The name of this program was derived from an early 1990's statistic reflecting that one person died in an alcohol related traffic collision every fifteen minutes.

This is a two day program involving a simulated fatal traffic collision with a DUI driver and the aftermath of the collision. The Riverside Police Department will conduct an on scene collision investigation with the assistance of the following agencies:

Riverside Emergency Medical Services

Riverside Fire Department

Riverside Sheriff/Coroner's Office

California Highway Patrol

American Medical Response

Riverside Community Hospital

Riverside County Regional Medical Center

Mercy Air Transport

Riverside County Office of Education

Students at Norte Vista High School will be the participants in the collision as drivers and injured passengers. The simulation will include on scene trauma triage by emergency medical personnel as well as a DUI investigation. On April 5, 2000 an assembly will be held at Norte Vista at which time the "Living Dead" students will be reunited with their parents. At this assembly a video of the previous days activities will be viewed by senior class.

The purpose of this program is to provide an accurate picture of an alcohol related fatal collision, the results of that collision, and the effect of such an incident, from the perspective of all parties involved. Our hope is to show not only young people, but all who drive, the choice to drink and drive rests with those who accept the privilege and responsibility of driving in the state of California.

Every 15 Minutes......The Choice Is Yours
