Fire and Explosion at Newco Facility

Riverside, Ca-  On May 9, 2001, at about 2216 hours, Riverside Police and Fire dispatch received a phone report of an explosion heard in the area of Jurupa and Payton Avenues.

Firefighters arrived and found four large trash trucks on fire a the Newco Waste facility, 7000 Jurupa Ave.  The blaze was extinguished, and no structures were involved.  The facility was closed at the time of the incident, and no employees or emergency personnel were injured.

Initial investigation indicated that the fire was possibly initiated by an explosion, and then spread to adjoining trucks.  The cause of the fire in under investigation.
